Irene Cara, Oscar-winning Singer of \”Fame\” & \”Flashdance\”, Dies at 63

Irene Cara, best known for hits like the title track to \’Fame\’ and \’Flashdance\’, has died aged 63 at her home in Florida. Her publicist released the news early this morning, saying the singer\’s cause of death is \”currently unknown\”.

A triple threat, Irene Cara is also known for playing the role of Coco Hernandez in the 1980 film Fame, as well as recording the film’s title song “Fame”. Prior to Fame, Cara portrayed the title character Sparkle Williams in the 1976 musical drama film Sparkle. Irene Cara won endless awards throughout her career including an Academy Award, Golden Globe & two Grammys as well as nominations for Best Supporting Actress, a Peoples Choice Award and an Obie Award as a child for her work in theatre.

She first dazzled audiences at the age of five. The youngest daughter of a Latin musician, she began her career singing and dancing on Spanish television performing with her fathers’ mambo band. The Grammy award winner went on to become a prominent actress with leading roles in theatre, television and films. Although, as a teenager, Cara worked as a background vocalist for many famous recording stars. It was during her breakout role in the acclaimed 1980 musical “Fame” that she was signed to be a recording artist in her own right and became an 80s icon.

In the UK, Cara achieved two Top 10 hits: 1982 No.1 for Fame and 1983 No.2 single for Flashdance…What A Feeling. She sang and co-wrote \’Flashdance… What a Feeling\’ which went on to win a Golden Globe, two Grammys and an Oscar in 1983 & 1984.

Her cause of death is unknown according to a statement released by her publicist. Further information will be released when available.
